The
‘European’ domain got the go ahead by the Commission in
March 2002 which will be operated by EURid or the European
Registry of Internet Domain names.
EURid aims to have its systems, rules, contracts and
procedures in place as soon so that it coincides with the
agreed policy rules and to recruit accredited registrars.
As with the previous launch of domains and in order to
resolve disputes over domains there will be a ‘sunrise’
period of four months. The “sunrise period” will allow
trade mark owners the opportunity to secure the domains
that reflect their rights before the domains are offered
to the rest of the market. The domains can be purchased by
trade mark owners if they can prove their trade mark
rights within forty days failing which the domains will be
released to the general public.
The period is offered in two phases, lasting for two
months for each period. The first phase is specifically
aimed at trade mark owners i.e. those which hold either a
national or Community trade mark holder, public bodies or
those which are used for geographical origins.
Booking Domain .EU
Booking means requesting a registration that will occur in
a second phase. After notification of accreditation, every
accredited registrar can start accepting these requests.
As soon as registrations are possible, registrars are
morally obliged to communicate their bookings to Eurid in
exactly the same order in which they have received them.
As for all other extensions, the "first come-first served"
principle is the rule that will be followed. For
registered Trademarks and names with particular
requirements a particular protection is foreseen.

Guarantee
Registration
Domain .EU
We don’t garantee the registration, as for every other
domain, the .eu registration is subjected to the "first
come-first served" principle. Booking means having better
chances of registering your domain, but it does not
guarantee it. Trade marks and name owners will be
appropriately protected.
Sunrise Period
Before the complete liberalization of .EU domains'
registration, there will be a phase, called the sunrise
period, that will allow Public Corporations and registered
brands' owners to demand corresponding domain names four
months in advance of the beginning of the registrations.
The assignation will be based on the "first come- first
served" theory.
Who can use the
“Sunrise Period”
Companies and individuals that apply for registration of
.EU domains during the sunrise period will however have to
satisfy important geographic requirements. Only those who
satisfy the following requirements will be able to proceed
with the request:
Societies having a regular registration in one of the
European Community countries;
Organizations having a regular constitution in the
European Community;
European residents.
The sunrise period will consist of two different phases.
Each of them will last two months. Registrations, based on
the "first come first served" theory, will start after
four months of the sunrise period.
During the first phase of the sunrise period
individuals and companies will be able to register domain
names corresponding to:
the
complete name of a Public Corporation;
an
acronym name a Public Corporation is commonly known as;
geographic
names that define territories governed by Public
Corporations;
National
or European registered brands.
The orders will have to be forwarded by Public
Corporations or registered brands' owners through an
accredited Registrar and Register.it will soon become one.
During the second phase of the sunrise period
individuals and companies will be able to register domain
names corresponding to:
all
names allowed during the first phase;
names
protected by the European Community's national laws;
- corporate names;
- distinguishing titles characterizing copyrights
- non registered brands;
- trade and products' brands.
